Work Experience
In this blog, I will be talking about the work experience I carried out at Chapman’s Physiotherapy.
Chapman’s Physiotherapy
During my 2-year sport course at Club Doncaster Sports College in my second year, I must complete 30 hours of work experience.
Chapman’s Physiotherapy is a private physiotherapy practice in Doncaster.
Chapman’s Physiotherapy carries out physiotherapy treatments, private classes to help patients recover from injuries or illnesses.
From being a client at Chapman’s and knowing a basic understanding of how they operate, I thought it would be a great place to start and contact my work experience.
Why I Wanted My Physiotherapy Work Experience In A Private Practice
In the physiotherapy profession, there are many types of physiotherapy. This can include;
- Sports physiotherapy
- Rehabilitation
- Women health physiotherapy
- And many more
Still, different companies run physiotherapy services such as the NHS, private practices like Chapmans and sports clubs.
I personally wanted my work experience to be in a sports club because I want to go to a sports physiotherapy.
However, with all of the COVID pandemic, it was a lot more challenging to get into a club with professional athletes. With the NHS being overwhelmed with the virus, I thought private practices would be the best way for me to get some work experience.
Carrying out my work experience at Chapman’s Physiotherapy gave me a broader understanding of the different types of patients coming through the practice. With various injuries and illness which have occurred in different situations.
The benefit of private practice physiotherapy is that the physiotherapist provides and demonstrates a higher level of physiotherapy. Which would benefit me in approaching an employer.
My Work Experience
My work experience at Chapman’s Physiotherapy was exciting in meeting different clients of different ages, other health and fitness levels, and various injuries.
This was an excellent way for me to be introduced to some work at a physiotherapy clinic. This allowed me to understand how injuries could occur and the rehabilitation/recovery time needed for a vast majority of injuries.
Tansy Clark, the physiotherapist who allowed me to sit in on clients, also explained through most of the client’s injuries how they did it. He explained what she was doing and what products I could use.
Volunteering Approach During The COVID-19 Pandemic
I would like to get some work experience in a physiotherapy practice to show my passion and desire for the profession, which will look good when applying for jobs and courses.
Volunteering is a good way of getting some work experience and getting to know more about the job as you will be experiencing it yourself and the client.
Approaching physiotherapy practices during the pandemic will be more complicated than usual. Still, with perseverance and effort, you will get a work placement. A couple of tips I would suggest would be;
- Picking up the phone and speaking to them
- Following up with an email about yourself and about the conversation you had with the practice
- Show willingness and motivation by offering more time for them to get to know you more.
